Lesson Plans: Study the Oceans

It can be a lot of fun to create your own curriculum, there are so many resources available to us now that were not available even 5 years ago.

Last year I created a series of Prezi lessons for my two youngest learners, then in First and Third grades.   I made sure I set it up so that an older student could also benefit from the presentation.  But the presentation was over 200 slides long and occasionally got "stuck" on a video.   And my girls had so much more fun finding the videos by themselves and watching their favorites again and again.

Parents should play around with the Pezi ahead of time, so you get used to the navigation.   I like the Prezi, because the Youtube videos are embedded, but it is possible to break into YouTube and find more videos on the same subject.  You can easily choose a video or link, and when you have finished watching or printing, just click on the left or right arrows on the black bar below to go back to the Prezi and choose again or go to the next slide.   The coloring pages do not always work out the way I had envisioned, so I included links below to find those and many others using Google Search.

This series of lessons can be done slowly over several weeks, or quickly over a few days.

You will probably want to watch the videos and choose which ones you want to use with your child, a few allude to evolution.

Slides 1 - 5 are about Creation.  You will find pictures to color or do a Google Search ahead of time to print your choice, a verse to memorize, and Creation videos to watch.

Slide 6 - On Day 2, God created the water - so the first part of Geography that I chose to present was the Water, and I started with the Oceans.

On each slide, there are many things to click on to explore, videos, comments, definitions, and sometimes links for further study.

Slide 7 - What Is An Ocean?

Slide 8 - How many oceans are there?

Slide 9 - The Atlantic Ocean

Slide 10 - The Pacific

Slide 11 - The Indian Ocean

Slide 12 - The Arctic Ocean

Slide 13 - The Antarctic Ocean

Slide 14 - Review

Slide 15 - Extra Study  -  some of these extra videos are higher learning level, not for early grades, some are drier, and some are over 15 minutes.   But if you have the time, you can explore these.

Slide 16 - Other water

Slide 17 - Sea - Gulf - Bay  ... explore several samples of each on the maps provided, click through to more articles, and enjoy several videos as well as definitions of each type of body of water.   Can you find all of these on an atlas or a globe?

Slide 18 - Fresh Water

Slide 19 - Lakes

Slide 20 - Rivers Part 1  -  Rivers Around the World

Slide 21 - Rivers Part 2 - Rivers of the East

Slide 22 - Rivers Part 3 - Extra Study of Rivers

Slide 23 - Moon and Tides

Slide 24 - Currents and Weather

Slides 25 - 27  -  Closing Statements  ...  Feel free to explore all of the videos that I've hidden around.

Do you have a favorite video that is not shown here about the water on earth?
Please include it in the comments!

Introduced by Christopher Harvie.Sir Edward Leithen, lawyer, politician, sportsman and occasional philosopher, was probably the most autobiographical of John Buchan’s heroes. This collection of four novels, written over a span of thirty years, shows Leithen/Buchan in all his moods – from the urban menace of The Power House in which ‘the thin line between civilisation and barbarism’ runs through London’s West End; to the Highland exhilaration of John Macnab; the twists and turns of The Dancing Floor; and Sick Heart River, where Leithen meets death and redemption in the wastes of Canada.Buchan’s learning and practical experience took him far beyond the range of the ‘clubland hero’ and these tales lead us to the heart of one of Scotland’s most fascinating and enigmatic writers.‘John Buchan was the first to realise the enormous dramatic value of adventure in familiar surroundings happening to unadventurous men.’ Graham Greene
